Boost Your Productivity This Fall!

With Summer fun coming to an end, and the holiday season still a few months away, it can seem like there aren’t too many things to look forward to in the upcoming weeks. That being said, now is the perfect time to shift the majority of your focus from sunny weekend plans to yourself.

We’ve compiled a list of 5 habits to start and 5 habits to stop in the upcoming months that will not only boost your productivity at work, but help you to feel great mentally and physically.



  1. Start drinking more water – Drinking water is key when it comes to staying generally healthy, keeping your skin clear, and losing weight. However, studies have shown the brain truly functions better when the rest of your body is hydrated. Not drinking enough water can cause anxiety, stress and fatigue to increase and take a greater toll on you throughout the day. Drink up!

  2. Start taking a short break every hour Stepping away from a task for a few minutes allows you to return to it with fresh eyes. You might catch a grammatical error you overlooked, or you might get a sudden boost of creativity allowing you to take your work from good to great. Taking a break can also help with any frustration that might be building up after working on a particular task and feeling stuck.

  3. Start making a to do list the night before – Making a to do list at the end of your day allows you to have direction as soon as you get to your desk the next morning. This means you don’t need to wait for your coffee to kick in in order for you to figure out what needs to be done that day. Doing this will also allow you to stay organized and on top of your deadlines.

  4. Start giving yourself time to recharge – No one is perfect. Everyone gets tired, feels stressed, overworks themselves, etc. Our society is in a constant state of activity (whether it be physical or mental), but if your body is telling you to slow down or take a break, listen to it! There is nothing wrong with going to bed early on a Friday night, or taking a mental health day. Your boss will be happier with you taking a day off to recharge and coming back ready to do your best work, than they will if you’re in the office, rundown and doing the bare minimum.

  5. Start dedicating your morning to challenging tasks – Studies show the most productive time of day is from 8:30am to 12:00pm, followed by a sudden decrease in motivation. This could be because people are getting hungry and distracted; it could be because the day is half over. Whatever the reason, use the first few hours of your day to get your most important tasks out of the way. This allows you to use your first bit of productivity bright and early, but it also means you won’t be rushing through an important project as the clock gets closer and closer to 5:00pm.



  1. Stop multitasking – Our world is full of distractions these days. While multitasking can be a great way to use your personal time (texting while cooking dinner, reading while you’re waiting for the washing machine) we don’t recommend you try to multitask while working. If you’re distracted at work, you’re taking a big risk of ruining a project you could have pulled off perfectly if you had been focused on the task at hand. For example, you could accidentally make a simple spelling error in a report, but you could also accidentally CC the wrong person on an email containing confidential information which could in turn lead to all different types of legal issues.

  2. Stop trying to function on less than 7 hours of sleep – Your body needs sleep to recharge and stay healthy. According to researchers, sleeping in a quiet, dark room directly leads to deeper sleep. In turn, deeper sleep leads to better brain function, as well as a healthier immune system. Which means turn the TV off at 10pm instead of 11pm to let your body slowly wind down naturally. We promise you’ll feel more refreshed and healthier, if you start getting more sleep.

  3. Stop checking your phone – The #1 distraction in our world – cell phones. Between texts, calls, emails and social media, we are constantly on our phones throughout the day. However, this is getting in the way of your focus at work, as well as your brain function. If you’re constantly refreshing your Instagram feed, chances are you are not getting too much work done because you’re distracted. We aren’t saying get rid of your phone and go back to the stone age, but try to reserve checking your phone for when you are taking a short break at work as we mentioned above.

  4. Stop hitting snooze – Thomas Jefferson said it best, “never put off till tomorrow what you can do today”. Not every day is guaranteed, so when your alarm goes off in the morning, get up (no matter how hard it is). Get yourself to the gym, beat traffic, get to work early and be excited to start a new day. No matter the reason you set your alarm early, get up and do what you had planned to do the night before. You’ll be glad you did.

  5. Stop putting off using your PTO – A lot of people get nervous asking for time off, but why? Your company grants you “paid time off” for a reason. They give you these days off to show they value you as an employee and appreciate all of the hard work you do. We understand there may be reasons a boss does not grant your request for a day off depending on the circumstances in your industry, or how much notice you have given them. With that in mind, you need to be respectful of your boss when asking for time off, just as they have been respectful enough to reward you with those days. However, you have earned those days. You are entitled to use them. Don’t feel guilty about it.
