Get Off the Hamster-Wheel!

By Tina Ruark-Baker

HAMSTER-WHEEL: Noun. (Figuratively) A monotonous, repetitive, unfulfilling activity, especially one in which no progress is achieved.

Still think using a staffing agency is too expensive? Truth is, it’s not as expensive as you think. Is time still money? You bet!! We all know that when you say you are paying an employee $15 per hour, the average cost per employees is 30-40% more, when you add in all of the additional costs such as payroll taxes, worker’s compensation, liability insurance, PTO’s,healthcare benefits and background checks. Yeah, yeah, yeah...but what does it actually cost to FIND a qualified candidate to fill one position?

HAMSTER-WHEEL FACTS. After over 25 years in the staffing industry, I’m still surprised at how many HR professionals don’t know what their true cost per hire is. And I’m often asked the question, “Does using a staffing partner really savemoney?” I think the real question should be – What is your time worth?

Finding talent is a full time job plus overtime, and that’s not adding in the cost to advertise for your open position. How long does it take for you to read through 200 emails/resumes per day from 1 job post? Forbes.com says over 4 hours a day; and that does not include the time it takes to respond or forward emails. You haven’t even started screening candidates over the phone yet. And when those resumes provide zero results, you now get to begin searching profiles on Linkedin. That’s a lot of time.

Costly facts:

  • 90% of submitted online resumes are not qualified.

  • 50% of online candidates never call you back or no show to an interview

  • 44.7 days - average time to fill a mid-level management position

GUARANTEE. Now let’s talk about the guarantee. Candidate guarantees are the silver lining to working with a staffing partner. Access Staffing guarantees all of our work! But let’s flip the coin (sort of speaking) - If an HR professional takes 30 days to find and hire someone – and they don’t work out, would that HR professional give the company back the money that it took to find that candidate? Ouch.......... I don’t think so.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? Recruiting is only one small part of your actual job as an HR professional. How much more effective could you be for your company if you had a true staffing partner vetting candidates for you? What about investing time into your own growth & career paths of your team? HR always has so many moving parts to support the structure of a business and to retain employees. Why spend your time chasing, screening and interviewing when it can be done for you for a fraction of the cost?

PURPLE SQUIRREL. I always get a weird look when I say to a new client–“We love working forf ree...until we find you the perfect candidate.” We don’t get paid until we find your "Purple Squirrel". Our recruiters are always working – 24/7. We are your field HR sales team – selling all the benefits about your company and why they would want to work there. Searching and sourcing all day, then speaking to candidates about their careers, their wants and wishes, matching skills sets, setting up interviews – most of the time, this work happens after hours. Why do we do it? Because we love being matchmakers!

IT’S A PEOPLE BUSINESS. The recruiting industry is fighting upstream against technology – the mouse is clicking all day long. HR technology is amazing, but it doesn’t replace and never will replace the one on one connection that speaking to candidates provides. Actually, many clients in the last year have moved away from their ATS technology and gone back to face to face interviews because candidates are declining offers due to not feeling connected to the company or management teams. Recruiting is all about connections. Who do you know? That’s what makes the leaders stand out.Anyone can place an ad, but knowing people BEFORE an ad is placed is the key to success.

AHA MOMENT. A friend and client who is a CHRO of a NYC midtown corporation finally admitted, after several years of painful selling, using Access Staffing has saved his company money. He admitted that having employees reading resumes and screening candidates cost so much more than meeting our vetted candidates. To many, it’s a control issue, but oncethey partner and realize how much time and money they save, it truly creates a long lasting partnership. We help build your business without the stress.

So let’s recap. Time is still money! Don’t get stuck on the recruiting hamster-wheel. It is cheaper to use Access Staffing than to do all of the work on your own.
